About The Area

Blandford Forum is one of the best preserved Georgian towns in the country. This came about as a result of the disastrous fire in 1731 which destroyed nearly all of the town. The Bastard brothers, John and William, helped to rebuild the town and much of their work and influence can still be seen in the town centre. The Market Place contains six Grade 1 Listed Buildings and there are over thirty Grade 2 Listed Buildings in the immediate vicinity. The Church of St. Peter and St Paul graces one end of the Market Place, completed in 1739 it is one of the finest churches of that period. There are many other old and historic buildings in the town including The Old House, one of the few buildings to survive the fire, and St Leonards Chapel which is said to have been a leper hospital in medieval times as well as being a nunnery.
The local area offers some of the most stunning countryside found in the County with Bulbarrow making you feel that you are on top of the world with the patchwork-quilt fields of the Blackmore Vale spreading out before you, home to Thomas Hardy’s most famous fictional heroine Tess, have little changed over the years. The River Stour is home to a myriad of rare species, including colourful kingfishers. Ancient Hillforts such as Hambledon and Hod Hill together with Badbury Rings where once Iron Age and Roman settlers enjoyed spectacular views from the lofty lookouts of their camps and castles, now just mystical earthworks and intriguing foundations. The Purbeck Hills on the Jurassic Coast and stunning beaches in Bournemouth and Studland are well renowned. Blandford Forum is superbly located within the county being within commuting distance of the major employment centres of Poole/Bournemouth 16/20 miles with Poole Quay a favourable spot to visit, the county town of Dorchester 16 miles and the Cathedral city of Salisbury across the border approximately 21 miles.
